[00:03] Hello everyone, my name is Tasneem Munjee from APPA Research and Insights. In this video I’m going to show you how you can visualize your data by creating charts using our Story Creator tool.

[00:18] As you can see, this is our landing page, and our data has been organized into different animal modules to make it easy for you to navigate. You can start visualizing your data and creating charts by clicking on the green Story Creator icon in each animal module, as well as in the screener and the State of the Industry.

[00:40] So let’s get started. I’m going to start creating charts and visualizing my data in the State of the Industry charts, so I’m going to click on this icon. Once I do that, it takes me to what we like to call a blank canvas, and this is where you can start visualizing your data.

[01:00] Right here in the middle of the page, you see different icons that show you everything you can do. You can create a chart, you can create a table, you can insert an image, you can add icons or shapes to your chart, and you can also add text.

[01:21] Let’s get started by creating a chart. I’m going to click on this chart icon. Once you do that, you’ll get a drop-down menu of all the questions you can use to create your chart. I’m going to start by creating a chart looking at pet ownership. Here is the pet ownership question; I’m going to click on it.

[01:52] You see that on the right-hand side, you get all the answer options included in the question. I really only want to see “yes” responses, so I’m going to click on Yes.

[02:05] Once you’ve done that, make sure you go up here to the top and select Filters and Splits, meaning what you want to filter your data by and how you want to split your data. So I’m going to click on Filters and Splits.

[02:23] I’d like to filter my data. Since it’s a screener question, I’m going to filter the data by the survey screener, so I click on it and then click on the filter icon, which is a funnel. There you go. Now when the chart is generated, my data will be filtered by the survey screener.

[02:48] I also want to look at the data trended, so I’m going to look for the Wave filter. Here it is. I’m going to click on that and get a drop-down menu. Here I don’t want to filter the data; I actually want to split the data. So I’m going to select all filter options, and then, instead of the funnel icon, I’m going to select the downward-facing arrow icon, which is the split.

[03:18] Once you do that, you can go ahead and calculate the results. There you go.

[03:26] Now is when the fun begins. Once you’ve created a basic chart, you can either leave it this way or customize it however you want. These buttons up here, Format Chart, Series Settings, and Apply Analysis, are the three buttons you’re going to use to customize your data.

[03:46] Right now we have a side bar chart. If you don’t want a side bar chart, you can go up here and change the format. I’m going to make it a column chart. There you go, it’s now a column chart.

[04:01] Let’s customize it a little more. Right now there are no data values shown, so I’m going to click on Data Values. It’s set to Hide by default, so I’m going to select Show. I’ve got the position on top. I don’t want to see decimals, so I’m going to get rid of those. And while we’re in there, let’s add a percentage sign, since these are percentages. Then, when I click out of it and close it, you see your percentages.

[04:43] Maybe we want to change the colors. You can do that as well by clicking on Format Chart. Format Chart is where you work on the appearance, or the aesthetics, of the chart.

[04:56] I’m going to select Series Colors. Here are your different options. Let’s see what happens: if I click Question Colors, nothing changes. If I click Answer Codes, it all becomes orange, but it’s all monochromatic. So how about we pick Split Colors? Let me click out of it so you can see. Now the columns are in different colors, so you can easily see which color belongs to which wave.

[05:35] If you want, you can also remove this label to make the chart look less crowded. I go back to Series Settings, then to Axis and Legend. This is the question label up there; I’m going to click on the eye icon so I don’t see it anymore. Now your chart is cleaner, and that label has disappeared.

[06:05] If you want to add any kind of text, you can go back to Format Chart and add a chart title. In here, I’ll type “Pet Ownership,” click Show, and you see it up there. Now you have “Pet Ownership,” and you have “Yes.” You can leave the “Yes” up there if you like.

[06:38] You can also go back to Format Chart (make sure your chart is selected) and go to Legend. Right now it’s set to Top; we can move it to the bottom. Close it out, and you’ll see your legend is now at the bottom.

[07:00] So this is one way you can visualize the data. You can also create a line chart, an area chart, or a pie chart, whatever makes sense for your data.

[07:12] Once you have that, you can create a new slide by moving to the left-hand side and clicking New Slide. Now you’ve got a new slide, and you can add an image. If you click on Image, it opens a window, and if you have any images saved, you can select one and add it in. You could, for example, create a cover page for your report.

[07:37] Once your chart is created, you can export it. Scroll up, and on the left-hand side you’ll see the Export button. Click on that, and you get options: you can export it as an image, or you can generate a PPT report, a PowerPoint report, so you can edit it further once it’s exported. Click on that, and you can export it. You’ll find it in your Downloads folder.

[08:11] And that’s it for now. Thank you for listening.
